I had seen first-hand, in Adelaide, on the \[2002-03\] Ashes trip, how Steve Waugh would try to pick a fight to give himself a jolt. Fred \[Andrew Flintoff\] was injured but, as twelfth man, was fielding at leg slip. As he did so, he burped. Waugh gave him an absolute volley.

> You’re a fucking rude prick, aren’t you? Who are you anyway? The 28th man?

I was at short leg and Fred and I looked at each other. We didn’t know what to do. Especially me – Steve Waugh was my hero. It was the one time me and Fred were lost for words. In the end we mumbled a meek "Fuck off" and left it there.
